Hey everyone, it's Tanya Zucco here. Hope you are having a great day. So, question for you guys. This is often a topic that comes up or rather a statement that comes up. And it's that belly fat, that gaining weight around the middle is often considered kind of an inevitable part of the aging process, right, especially women as they move into their 40s and 50s. That darn belly fat, right? Well, I don't agree that it's inevitable.
So, hi, guys, I'm Tanya, for those who don't know me. I'm Tanya Zucco. I'm a board-certified physician assistant, functional medicine practitioner, and hormone expert, and my passion is helping women 40 Plus look, feel and perform their best.
So let's get back to the topic. So, I don't agree that it's inevitable to, as we get into our 40s, and 50s and beyond to have that belly fat right. Now, while our bodies do change as we get older, you know, belly fat and weight gain is not something that we need to accept. And you guys know this, those of you who have listened to me, it's something that I preach. Now, in fact, accepting that can actually have serious health consequences. See, I know that losing weight is a complex issue. And many believe it's all about surrendering to that diet culture to see all women thin at any cost.
And so, you know, just like yesterday, in my video, I was talking about that it's more important to, there's things more important than just looking at the number on the scale, right. And that's another reason, and this topic today is another reason that I want to shift the focus that I believe we should have from weight loss to fat loss. Okay. Now, look, I absolutely believe the importance of this body positivity movement that accepts women in all beautiful shapes and sizes, right. But it's also really important to know that belly fat, that visceral fat around the belly, is not benign. This belly fat is called visceral fat, okay. And it's dangerous because it puts you at greater risk for diabetes and heart disease. And it's not, you know, just this annoying fat that makes it hard to sort of zip up your jeans. The fat around your belly is actually biochemically different from fat in other areas of our body. And it makes this sort of like inflammatory brew of these bad chemicals that causes you to age faster than someone who has only minimal belly a visceral fat.
And actually, studies have shown that visceral fat in that abdominal area is the most important health predictor in women. So while aging is inevitable, fat gain, especially around the belly, is not. And so when you make metabolic and hormone health and fat loss your goal instead of just weight loss, the belly fat is going to start to melt off, the rest of your body is going to fall into place, and you are going to feel great. And you're going to get the added bonus of improving your health span and decreasing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses as we get older, so it's a win-win.
