How does stress affect your weight loss and fat loss goals?

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

What is up, guys? Hey, hey, Tanya Zucco here. Hope you're having an amazing day. It's a gorgeous day here, as always in Sarasota. So those of you who don't know me, I am Tanya Zucco. I am a functional medicine practitioner, board certified physician associate and hormone expert.

So, today what I wanted to talk to you guys about is that darn stress. Okay, we've all heard it, right? We've heard it a gajillion times that stress can make you gain weight. And it can make it impossible to lose weight too, right? And I know we've also heard the tip, work on your stress, it'll help you lose weight. But I also know that that's not particularly helpful, right? It's like, thanks. Do you have anything specific? I get it.

So what I wanted to cover today is that the good news is there are actually objective, specific things that you can do to fix this. Okay.

So first, let's talk about how this happens. Why does stress actually make it difficult to lose weight? Or why does that make us gain weight? Okay, so excessive stress can block or lower the production of thyroid, or sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone growth hormone, and melatonin.

So today, let's start with one. Let's look at the downstream effects of stress and your thyroid. Okay. So there is a really important chain reaction between the thyroid and the adrenal, aka stress systems. So when your stress is high, meaning when your cortisol is high, this slows down the thyroid hormone production, big time. And so in order to start fixing this, you've got to tackle both high cortisol and the low thyroid at the same time to really see results. Okay, so besides the "do something relaxing" tip, which you should do, like this is my relaxing thing to do is hanging out by the pool. Okay. So you should actually do that.

But here are three tips for each managing your high cortisol and your low thyroid. Okay? So high, high cortisol. So first thing you want to do is check your vitamin intake, especially B1, B5, B6, B12, C, and tyrosine. Okay? Also do not forget magnesium. Okay, we can talk about magnesium another day, so many other benefits, but magnesium is excreted when you have a lot of stress. So definitely make sure you're supplementing with that. And also add in phosphor title Siri P S, okay.

The second tip for managing your high cortisol is limit your alcohol. I know, I know. Seems like there's a trend here. We're talking about a lot of alcohol here lately. And the third tip is wean from caffeine. Okay, so now let's talk about your thyroid.

Three tips to manage your low thyroid. Okay, so first, you want to check your copper, zinc and your Selenium. And if those are out of balance, you certainly want to supplement with those. The second thing you want to do is check your vitamin A and supplement with that. Okay. Now the third thing and this is really important is iron. Okay, so iron is really important for normal thyroid function. Even if you are not formally diagnosed as hypothyroid. This is something you should check. Because incorrect iron us incorrect iron levels can really affect your thyroid, and even minimal imbalances can make you have symptoms. So make sure you are speaking with your practitioner about monitoring your serum ferritin test, okay, this is how you monitor your iron, and iron, iron. And you want to make sure you keep your level between 70 and 90.

Okay, now here's another really important thing. And this kind of goes along the lines of you know, people think that just because supplements are over the counter, it doesn't mean that they can have dangers or you know, negative effects they can, okay, so make sure if you are supplementing with iron over the counter, that if you are taking a thyroid medication, that you do not supplement with the iron within four hours of taking your thyroid medication or it is going to affect the absorption of the thyroid medication and potentially, you know, make it not work.

So, these were just a few of the recommendations. And there's many other recommendations that can be made based on your individual imbalances. But these are certainly really good starting points. And I hope this was helpful for you guys. Something I really wanted to cover because it seems that I've been seeing a lot of this lately. So thanks for tuning in. If you think this was helpful, and you think it could help someone else, definitely please share. And thanks again for being here with me today. Have an amazing day. And I will catch you guys next time. Bye
